Working memory is divided into two systems: the verbal, or phonological loop, and the visuospatial, or visuospatial sketchpad (VSSP). Phonological loop is responsible for processing language, and visuospatial sketchpad is responsible for processing visual images, and is responsible for holding a few pieces of information in mind for a short period of time.
Memory is a form of knowledge. When we think of memory, we typically think of facts that we learn through our senses (sensory memory), emotions (emotional memory), what we've done (cognitive memory), and what other people have done (social memory).
The brain's working memory, which is the size of a small coffee cup, is the location where short-term memories are stored. It has 2 main components: a central executive and a mediating system. The central executive sits at the front of the brain and keeps the information in order while the mediating system turns the information from sensory input into a meaningful memory.
The mediating system is what enables the brain to distinguish between short and long-term memories. This system, which has two main parts, is a learning system and a maintenance system. It's what lets the brain store information and retrieve it later. Once stored, that information is protected from forgetting by the maintenance system. The learning system uses a particular kind of learning called associative. The memory can be formed in the learning system by linking a new piece of information to the information already there.
Episodic memory is when we remember a specific time and place, which means we are able to tell whether something happened today, last week, last year, at this time of day, etc. It involves storing information in specific areas of the brain, the 827ec27edc
