This International Standard represents a consensus of the understanding of the IEC standards working groups under their standardization and technical management responsibilities. This International Standard complies with the requirements of ISO/IEC Guide 50, “Reference systems for measuring sound pressure levels in the frequency range below 4000 Hz,” ISO 226 and ISO 5349-1. The requirements of ISO 5349-2 are also satisfied.

This International Standard employs the concept of “acoustically free field” to explain its measurement and calculation methods. An acoustically free field is a medium in which the pressure level of an acoustic wave at a specified location is substantially independent of the distance from that location to that or any other source of sound. The specification of a suitable method for determining the sound pressure level (or sound energy level) of the sound source in a free field is necessary for a method to be judged to be capable of providing an accurate measurement of sound pressure levels or sound energy levels.

In order to clarify the concept of an acoustically free field, the term “virtual source” is used. If the concept of an acoustically free field is applied to sound propagation in real time, it can be inferred that a virtual source exists in that field. An acoustic source is defined as a physical source of sound that generates a radiated acoustic wave. An acoustic source is a transient source because its emission of acoustic energy is not constant over a specified period. For the purposes of describing sound pressure levels or sound energy levels, a true acoustic source is equivalent to a virtual source.
