When researchers first started to study the subject of intelligence, there was a significant amount of research that agreed with the idea that genetics played a much bigger role than environment. However, as the number of studies has increased, the influence of genetics has decreased. A 1999 study found that about 21% of the variance of general intelligence (also known as g) is due to genetics, but 40% is due to environment.
The truth is that both nature and nurture play a large role in intelligence. Although genetics and environment seem to have a very large effect on the development of intelligence, both are equally important. The following graph shows the average IQ of siblings separated by the age of their birth.
This study also found that the effect of environment on intelligence is larger for people who have higher IQs. The following figure shows how the percentage of variance that is attributed to genetics decreases with IQ, with the largest variance of g occurring in people with an IQ score of 140 or above. Although the variance of g increases with IQ, it decreases with genetics.
