In 1976, Fernando acted in the film Saradielge Putha directed by Neil Rupasinghe.[6] The film was a turning point in his career where he acted a realistic role as a Tamil prisoner. This film was well received by filmgoers when it came out. Fernando won the Presidential Award for this role.[5] He also acted alongside another Sinhala actress Thushara Seneviratne in the film Pasa Mithuro. Both the film and Fernando received excellent reviews.[9]
In 1969, Fernando acted in numerous Sinhala, including the film Homagamaya. However, he did not find any major roles in the film.[4] In 1970, Fernando was invited to act in a leading role in Matthew Edirisinghe's film Thoouya. As one of the villains, he acted opposite Gamini Fonseka.[6] The film was banned from being shown due to a Madras mutiny and thus, it was screened outside of Sri Lanka. After the film, Fernando met veteran filmmaker U. R. Jeyasingh, who offered him a role in Irantha Sathish Prasanna.[8] That film was the first time that he provided the dialogue.[2] Fernando's third film was Udara Manaya directed by G. B. Tilakaratna.[7]
Not long after appearing in Saradielge Putha, Fernando acted in the film Nettipakara Da in 1977. It was one of the first film he acted in.[4] Some of the most acclaimed boxing and martial arts fights in the past were directed by Fernando.[7] As a villain, his roles included several hit songs and dances. Fernando was known for his excellent choreography.[7] During this period, Fernando had the opportunity to act with the Sri Lankan music legend K. M. Jayaratne.[7] 7211a4ac4a
